Confident In Every Terrain: 1983 Land-Crusier
This FJ40’s story begins with a five-year-old boy who thought he was riding in the back of a “Safari truck from Africa.” It was an FJ40 from Japan, but that didn’t matter to our future client. This vehicle was stuck in his mind, and at the age of 25, he purchased his own FJ40: a 1975 model he drove around the Bay area of San Francisco. Two years later, he sold his prized FJ40 and moved to New York. He’s wanted another one ever since.
Born of Happy Coincidence
Luckily, a series of coincidences would get our client behind the wheel of another FJ40. First, he married another Land Cruiser enthusiast, who would see one of our ads on Instagram years later. Then, while he was visiting our showroom in Miami, his brother sent him a photo of one of our FJs in Aspen, Colorado. Obviously, fate had set the wheels in motion, and soon, our client had tasked us with building the Land Cruiser of his dreams!
A Classic Remake
Our client decided on a 1983 model that was restored to U.S. specifications with a few minor modifications for comfort and drivability. Why U.S. spec? Because, although Toyota produced these vehicles in 1984, the 1983 was the last FJ40 model shipped to the U.S. He also opted for Rustic Green paint, to match the Land Cruiser his wife remembers from her childhood in Venezuela — a color that creates a striking contrast with the Toyota white wheels.
This FJ40 is equipped with a rebuilt classic powertrain and other features that make it ideal for a quick spin around town or a day of off-roading. The Toyota 2F engine was completely rebuilt and mated to the revitalized 4-speed transmission. This FJ40 is equipped with BFGoodrich® All-Terrain tires and an upgraded Old Man Emu suspension, which give this classic 4×4 a more comfortable, yet capable ride.
One of the best things about this FJ40 is that it’s made tough – inside and out. The seats, interior door panels, and the custom center console are trimmed in vinyl for easy maintenance, while the exposed metal dashboard, with its retro knobs and gauges, only adds to this rig’s underlying utility. Within the cabin, you’ll also find a few modern-day essentials like the digital radio with iPhone® and Bluetooth® connectivity, and Vintage Air Gen IV climate control.
Part of our family of Classic builds, this FJ40 embodies everything an authentic Land Cruiser should be, and more. Build one like this, or start your own design from scratch. Either way, we know you’ll enjoy the adventure.
